What is
China
up to with its absurd and idiotic moves
on air space in the Senkaku Islands. I am amazed that this rift does not also
involve Taiwan which is far closer to the Islands than either Japan or China.
Perhaps Taiwan is just biding its time. China is about as mercurial as Hamid
Karzai when it comes to diplomacy.
Some say with a degree of credibility that China is exercising its
strength simply out of pride over its economic accomplishments. While it may
have a lot to be proud of, I would advise the country to first consolidate its
economic position and then set its vast population to work on civil
infrastructure before charging off into territorial claims over chunks of real
estate in the China Sea.
Meanwhile, the USA might consider doing something to enhance its
ties with Viet Nam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan. I believe
we are on pretty strong ground with Japan and have shown the type of solidarity
needed to convince China that we would defend Japan's territorial claims and
interests.
In a deeper vein, I readily understand the historical animosity
between the two players. China has a memory like and elephant and will not
forget Japan's depredations at its expense prior to and during WWII.
